Fantastic Teachers

I came to Beijing for a mandarin learning vacation and took 3 classes per day for two weeks in person at That’s Mandarin Beijing. Gabriella and the other teachers here are absolutely amazing. They’re so energetic and engaging and make class really fun. The curriculum was really well designed to be as practical and useful as possible while still meeting HSK learning objectives. If you get the textbook that goes with your class it has all the vocabulary and dialogues so you can review them later without having to spend class time writing everything down. I like that out time is focused more on listening and speaking.

Pros
  • Great, engaging teachers!
  • Convenient Location
  • Competitively priced
Cons
  • WiFi isn’t great

That’s Mandarin Language School

That’s Mandarin language school is situated in the popular Dongzhimen area of Beijing in China. This is very convenient for access to the main tourist attractions and central business districts of the capital city. The learning course that I chose (1to1) was specifically designed for my goals and the technology used to help me, such as Internet tools, video and audio resources are extremely useful. My teachers are very well trained and experienced to help me achieve my goals and the leaders, reception staff and others involved with the school are some of the friendliest I’ve known during my time in china. I’m already planning a return next year!

Pros
  • Professionalism
  • Expertise
  • Friendliness
Cons
  • Beijing is very hot in the summer

That's Mandarin Beijing

Studied for 4 weeks with 4 hours of one-to-one classes every day. The school was helpful with tailoring the curriculum according to my needs. Teachers were always prepared, supportive and engaged. Homework consisted mainly of reviewing past lessons. The school has nice facilities centrally located in a nice area, and the school's online learning platform is very useful for reviewing past lessons. Overall a very good experience, and I recommend this school for people who are looking for a personalised study experience.

Lessons are helpful and engaging

I have been taking weekly private online lessons with Wu Laoshi for over a year now. I started out with an intermediate level of Chinese, and feel that my ability to recognize a variety of characters has improved noticeably since then. The lessons are customized to my specific needs, and the teacher is always adaptive and receptive to suggestions. The staff are friendly and patient, and the lessons are entertaining as well as educational. I look forward to my lessons each week, as there is never a lack of interesting topics to discuss.

Great Course, Great Teachers

My Experience:
I did That's Mandarin 1-1 private tutoring three days a week, two lessons per day (2hours). I completed their Level 2 in about a month and a half. I came into the program with about 8 months of self studying having flash-carded about 1000 characters and having listened to some beginner material on FluentU and LingQ. That's Mandarin has a self assessment quiz that lets you determine what level you are at. To my surprise I had only mastered HSK 1 level, so I decided to start classes at HSK 2.

The course is centered on a series of videos that introduce new vocabulary and grammar at a comfortable pace. The teacher will explain the new vocabulary, give examples of how it is used and then make the student use the vocabulary in conversation. Then the student will watch the video with the teacher and summarize what happened using the new vocabulary. Overall it is a very effective method that cements the new language into memory quickly. There is also homework based on the videos, so you have to rewatch at home and practice the new content. Everything is done via an online platform which is super convenient.

My Opinion:
Overall I really enjoyed the course. I thought the videos were well made and the dialogue was well designed to teach new words and grammar. I found myself using a lot of the new language immediately in real life to order food and ride taxis and go shopping. My listening skills improved dramatically over the course, which is something that was very hard for me to do on my own. The teachers are very good at what they do and very supportive. They are quick to explain mistakes in my grammar and reinforce things I keep getting wrong. I do think the classes were little on the pricey side. You certainly get what you pay for though, this is probably the among best Chinese schools in the city. The school also has group classes that are cheaper and run twice a week, something I might try in the future. I don't think I could have improved this quickly on my own.

Pros
  • Great Teachers
  • Really great course content and platform
  • Fast progress
Cons
  • A little pricey
