A Great Learning Opportunity

The CIEE TEFL course created a wonderful platform to meet with like-minded, motivated, and intelligent individuals as peers under kind and patient, qualified teachers. The instructors were always quick to answer any and all questions and provided ample feedback with all assignments. The course prepared me well for the classroom by outlining challenges I could anticipate and hadn't yet thought of. The only complication I encountered was issues with Canvas at times but this was not at the fault of CIEE. Overall a great experience!

Great class! Highly recommend!

This class went by super quick even though it was 10 weeks long. The teacher was amazing and always responded really fast and was always helpful and understanding when something went wrong. I feel a lot more prepared to teach English as a foreign/second language after taking this class. I was also able to make meaningful relationships with my classmates and will be able to stay connected with them even after this class is over. It helped that a lot of my classmates are planning on teaching at the same place as me.

Wonderful Introduction to Teaching Abroad

I had never taught before, so I’m very glad I took the CIEE TEFL course! I learned a lot about how to react to different cultures and classroom situations that I will reflect back on during my teaching. I had an excellent teacher who helped me with any questions I had. I was also given the opportunity to create my own lesson plan and receive feedback on it. I also got to interact with other students who also plan to teach abroad! In addition, I’m thankful I was required to get real teaching experience. I would recommend this class to others!

Pros
  • Helpful teaching
  • Flexible schedule
  • Online student interaction
Cons
  • Can be overwhelming
  • Can be time consuming, especially if you work full time
  • Can be difficult to learn online

Great Program

This course was straightforward and easy to keep track of all assignments, due dates, and seminar hours. The course instructor provided great feedback on all written assignments and helped with providing ideas for completing the practicum hours. CIEE was flexible in providing an extension on the practicum hours when I needed more team for the 8 hours of active teaching I had to do, which was extremely helpful in completing. I was able to complete this course while also working full-time. Many others in my course were also using the placement assistance after completion of the course, even though I am not, they seemed like they were getting plenty of support in learning about their new classroom and we had assignments for students to practice on their lesson plans using their new class portfolios they recieved.

Get your TEFL

This was a great experience. I feel so much more prepared for going to teach abroad in Thailand now. I learned many ideas for activities to use in the classroom, how to engage with students from different cultures, and also tips on adjusting to living in a new country. The coursework had a lot of variety from multiple choice quizzes, to videos, to writing projects, to presentations and more. It was never boring and something I looked forward to working on each week. The team was also great help and quick to answer questions.

Great course! I would definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed my CIEE TEFL Certification course. The course is completely online, so you are able to complete each module at your own pace. Because it is quite a bit of work condensed into just 10 weeks, I found the weekly deadlines for quizzes and assignments very helpful to keep me on track. I am not sure where I will teach yet, but I imagine if you are planning to teach right away, being able to complete the certification in 10 weeks would be very helpful. My teacher was wonderful and very quick to respond to any questions I sent her through Canvas. I actually really enjoyed the discussion boards to discuss the material with peers, and the weekly assignments were engaging and thought provoking way. Overall, I do feel prepared to teach!

Pros
  • It is self-paced, but there are deadlines to hold you accountable.
  • Like with most classes, you get back what you put in!
  • CIEE has created a very supportive and encouraging environment.
Cons
  • There is quite a bit of work and material condensed into only 10 weeks, but it is up to the student how much work they would like to put into the class.
  • I appreciate the flexibility of the online nature of the course, but I did miss being able to connect with my peers in person.

Great Course!!!

This course was amazing! As someone who had no prior teaching experience this really helped me to feel more prepared. I now feel very knowledgeable in being able to plan lessons and know how to handle different classroom situations. I’m so glad I opted to take this course because this truly was a lifesaver. Overall, this was a great class and I would 100% recommend it to anyone who wanted a refresher or who also has never had any prior teaching experience. I also loved that it was entirely online and was not mandatory to attend any zoom sessions. As someone who works full time and goes to school this was a saving grace because I am always busy with something.

Pros
  • Goes by so fast
  • Completely online
  • At your own pace
Cons
  • Does take up a lot of time

CIEE TEFL: Great overall program (especially to prepare for in-person teaching)

I decided to get my TEFL certification after doing an exchange year abroad (which had partially been supported by CIEE). Throughout the program, the CIEE staff and course instructor were very helpful with any questions, etc. I found this TEFL program to be premier compared to others, in that it is 150 hours in total, with a mandatory practicum, which truly helps apply what you learn in the course to a real-life situation. I had also been able to find my practicum location relatively easily with help from CIEE, which was a big relief for me. The actual course portion was detailed, touching base on a variety of areas that a TEFL teacher should be aware of. The graded assignments were also good practice to reinforce key points, especially when it came to lesson planning. All in all, my experience taking this course was positive, and it has helped me a lot in my current tutoring positions.

Pros
  • Pretty flexible due to the online format
  • Can get help afterwards in finding a teaching placement
  • Plethora of resources to help with teaching
Cons
  • Focuses on mainly in-person teaching (not so much for online teaching)
  • May be more time-consuming than initially thought (try to not do the course when your particularly busy)

Questions & Answers

Great question! CIEE TEFL does not require a college degree to get certified so all of our programs would be a great fit. If you're looking for teaching placements without a degree, it varies by country. CIEE TEFL offers a teaching opportunity in Murcia, Spain where only a high school degree is required.

Hi Victor! Yes - as Joanna said, you are expected to find your own practicum in your area. I found it intimidating at first but it is actually a great way to prep you for the job hunt that is ahead of you. CIEE's list is a good starting point but don't limit yourself to it, I am sure you will find plenty of schools, non-profits that work with immigrants, churches, etc. in your area that will be...

Mostly yes. There is a weekly online meeting with your teacher, and you can select from a variety of appropriate times. Also, they want you to keep pace with the class, so that you'll do roughly one module per week. There is also a final date when the practicum is due. However you can do the course at your convenience, and whenever you have available time.
